‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s path from rehabilitation to success with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward competed in the UK, an teenage representing Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. The second time he played in British turf, against the English side following that, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City soon after, well, he scored again. When he returned to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the forward says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear the validity, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the quick travel to the airport and another flight to the UK, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the team, due in part to the demands of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. The son of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the Donostiarra team that developed the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his first-team bow in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the top level but each step you progress through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed emotionally in 2020, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, at times, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
